FAQ

1. Who is it for?
Any South African government department that wishes to establish an Internet sub-domain within GOV.ZA domain, whether within the Government VPN's or an external ISP.

2. Any costs involved?
DNS registrations are free, however the GOV.ZA Domain Administrator reserves the right to change this.

3. When should an application form be submitted?
The sooner the better to allow time for the submitted application forms to be processed. However, a completed application form must reach the GOV.ZA Administrators not later than 12:00 SAST (10:00 GMT) on a Thursday. (This requirement is strictly applied)

4. When does DNS synchronisation happen?
DNS synchronisation happens once a week at 23:59 SAST (21:59 GMT) on Thursdays.

5. When can I expect the DNS entries to work?
Applicants can normally test at 00:01 SAST (22:01 GMT) on a Friday if the registration was successful. If not the GOV.ZA Administrator can be contacted Friday morning for support. If the domain responds positively, it in essence means that the sub-domain has been delegated to your ISP of choice and future requests and support issues should be directed to them first.

6. What is the Applicant / GOV.ZA Administrator's responsibility?
It remains the applicant's responsibility to do follow-up enquiries. The GOV.ZA Administrator's responsibility is to co-ordinate the successful registration of the sub-domain.

13. I have registered a .gov.za domain, and I am the technical contact. Can someone else change the records without my knowledge?
We are authoritive for the .gov.za domain. In our zone file we delegate domains to name servers. If the owner of a domain decides to update the domain information to delegate the domain to a new ISP, yours will disappear and it will be their choice to inform you about their intentions.

14. Please define owner?
Ownership of a registered domain remains with the government department. Ownership is not vested in any individual representative of the department or contractor.

15. What is the difference between a Host name and a Domain name?
A host name is the logical name assigned to a computer.
On the Web, most hosts are named "www"; for example, www.mydepartment.gov.za.

If a site is composed of several hosts, they might be given different names such as
"support.mydepartment.gov.za" and "sales.mydepartment.gov.za".

"support" and "sales" are the host names, "mydepartment" is a sub-domain name.

"gov" is the 2nd level domain and "za" is the top-level domain name.

16. Who may sign the application form?
The person who will carry the responsibility for administrative and policy matters of the sub-domain to be established. This person must be of a level/rank equivalent to CIO or Director within the organisation.

17. Who is the technical contact?
The Technical Contact (This person must not be the same as the administrative contact) carries the responsibility for all technical matters of the sub-domain to be established. This is the person or group who will be doing the actual DNS administration.
